The edge of his poem is not silence but the banter and commentary in which it lies embedded. This pointedly risky strategy of creating a lyric can, when it is not in control, produce tracts and harangues that run tediously on devoid of any poetry. When inspired, however, the language gives way to a charged form of words partly submerged in the verbal undergrowth. His poems are like forms half perceived lying in high grass. His verbal felicity has, however, occasioned more dry commentary than inspired lyricism.
