Lacan situates aggressivity in the dual relation between the ego and the counterpart. In the MIRROR STAGE, the infant sees its reflection in the mirror as a wholeness, in contrast with the uncoordination in the real body: this contrast is experienced as an aggressive tension between the specular image and the real body, since the wholeness of the image seems to threaten the body with disintegration and fragmentation (see FRAGMENTED BODY). The consequent identification with the specular image thus implies an ambivalent relation with the counterpart, involving both eroticism and aggression.
Conversely, something may exist without being, such as the ‘ineffable, stupid An introductory dictionary of Lacanian psychoanalysis 18 existence’ of the subject, which cannot be completely reduced to a signifying articulation (E, 194). Lacan coins the neologism parlêtre from the verbal noun être (being) and the verb parler (to speak) to emphasise his point that being is constituted in and through language. A human being is above all a speaking being. Bejahung In his ‘Reply to Jean Hyppolite’s commentary on Freud’s Negation’ (Lacan, 1954b), Lacan describes a primordial act of affirmation which is logically prior to any act of NEGATION.
In 1926, however, he abandoned this theory and argued instead that anxiety was a reaction to a ‘traumatic situation’—an experience of HELPLESSNESS in the face of an accumulation of excitation that cannot be discharged. Traumatic situations are precipitated by ‘situations of danger’ such as birth, loss of the mother as object, loss of the object’s love and, above all, castration. Freud distinguishes between ‘automatic anxiety’, when the anxiety arises directly as a result of a traumatic situation, and ‘anxiety as signal’, when the anxiety is actively reproduced by the ego as a warning of an anticipated situation of danger.
